Is it time for new tires for your vehicle?

Sometimes it's hard to be sure. The expert technicians at AAMCO of Lee’s Summit, MO can help you to determine if your car, truck, SUV or van is ready to have the tires replaced.

Tire Wear Warning Signs

Depth of the Tread:

If your tire’s tread falls below 1/16th of an inch in depth, it is definitely recommended that you get new tires. If you regularly drive in bad weather conditions, getting new tires at 1/8 of an inch of tread in depth is a good idea. An easy way to check for this is to use the old penny trick. Take your penny and put it with Lincoln’s head side down into the tire tread. If you see that Lincoln’s head is partly covered, then your tire is still within the suggested safety requirements. If this is not the case, then it is highly recommended that you get new tires as soon as possible. Many manufacturers now include an indicator to warn you when your tread gets low. An indicator that your tread is getting low is often depicted by flat rubber bars.

Cracked Sidewalls:

In addition to low tread, another sign that your tires might need to be replaced are cracks in the sidewalls of your tires. Cracks in your sidewalls can potentially lead to leaks and create a serious safety issue, like a blown tire.

Surface Bulges:

Oftentimes, when a tire’s exterior starts to weaken and degrade, you may see a lump or blister-type bulge that somewhat protrudes from the surface of the tire. This bulge can also lead to a blowout if not given appropriate attention.

Vibration:

Vibrations can also be a good indicator that it’s time to get new tires. Generally, when tires vibrate while you are driving it may indicate the need for a tire alignment or it could also potentially be something else, like a shock absorber issue. It’s a smart idea to get it checked out to be sure.
