Is Your Vehicle Blowing Cold Air in Winter?
Is your vehicle blowing cold air during winter? If so, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your vehicle needs a major repair. Understanding how vehicle heaters operate will help you to diagnose if your vehicle heater is having an issue or if you simply just need to warm your car up a bit longer.
About Car Heaters
Your vehicle’s heating system warms up the cabin of your vehicle by basically using the heat coming from your engine. If you are not feeling warm air coming out of the heater, it may just be that you need more time to let your vehicle’s engine warm up before driving.
There are essentially two different designs for car heaters, an Automatic Temperature Control System and a Manual Control System. The manual system needs to be adjusted by a driver or a passenger in within the vehicle, and the automatic system is run by computer. Your car’s heating unit controls the blower motor, temperature controls and blend doors. It’s good to understand the basics of your car’s heating system when it comes to troubleshooting issues.
Potential Car Heater Issues
When your vehicle is blowing cold air during winter as opposed to warm air, there are a few things to review before you bring your car in for repairs.

 • Your thermostat could be stuck in the open position
• There might be a coolant leak causing a low coolant level
• Your car’s blower motor or heater core might be plugged or leaking
• Your heater blower is not working properly
• Your vehicle’s blend doors may not be working as it should
If you live in a place that experiences severe cold weather, it’s a good idea to have your vehicle’s heating system checked before the winter starts.
