Obscure Rules of the American Road

There are some strange laws out there that stay on the books mainly because people have forgotten about them. Oftentimes, it’s that no one has ever bothered to change them. No matter the reason, they’re the law, and you may still get a ticket for breaking them. Below is a list of laws to be sure to follow when you’re in town, as odd as they may be.

1. Windshield wipers in Texas are not optional, but windshields are.
Sports cars and hot rods don’t need to have windshields, but all cars still need windshield wipers in order to register the vehicle.
2. Pumping your own gas in Oregon is against the law.
Even though most people do pump their own gas, it’s technically illegal.
3. It’s OK to drive against traffic on a one-way street in Alabama.
But only with lantern in front of your vehicle.
4. It’s illegal to jump out of a car traveling 65 miles per hour in California.
Well, it’s definitely a bad idea everywhere, the city of Glendale, California decided to put this law into the books.
5. Leave your hanging dice at home in New Jersey.
Having anything hanging from your rear view mirror in New Jersey is illegal, even religious items.
6. Turning left on red in Oregon is legal.|
Oregon drivers are allowed to turn left from a two-way street onto a one-way street if the light is red. Even if the driver is turning left onto the highway.
7. You must sound your horn when entering Lawrence.
In order to warn horses of your arrival, you must sound your horn when you enter the city limits of Lawrence.
Most of the US is pretty consistent with its traffic laws from state to state, but there are times when laws fall through the cracks. You may find these outdated laws rather silly, but regardless of what laws are in the books, your vehicle will always need maintenance and repairs.
